This has to be the greatest practical joke ever played.

Blogs 4 Brownback has a tremendously entertaining post about how heliocentrism (the theory that the earth revolves around the sun) is an atheist doctrine and is, in essence, not true. Quoth the author “Sisyphus”:

I support the Bible, and I don’t want my children learning about Heliocentrism in school. I think this doctrine encourages atheism, Darwinism, and anti-Americanism. I don’t want my tax dollars going to finance this kind of false science. It’s complete rot, and I hope that those of us who come to realize this can ultimately prevail against its propogation amongst OUR children with the money from OUR salaries.

I can’t wait to hear from the moonbats and the Darwinists and the other rubes on this one, though. Go on, witch doctors. Preach to me how the planet hurtles through the ether, Scriptural and physical evidence to the contrary! Your false doctrines will be cast down on the day when America rediscovers its Christian roots. That is a promise.

As of right now, there are 110 comments to Sisyphus’ post, most calling him a loon, moron and fundy Christian freak. The vitriol is strong. But in the end, the critics are all wrong — Sisyphus is a genius.

Not only is this particular post a perfect example of trolling, but his entire blog is. Everything is a mockery of what Brownback — the conservative religious Republican candidate who said he doesn’t believe in evolution, among other things — stands for. Brownback has absolutely no chance of winning anything ever in this political world, and that’s largely because of his completely soft-headed views on major issues. The dude’s out to lunch.

But the beauty is that to the uneducated reader, Blogs 4 Brownback’s satire and sarcasm is missed entirely. Hence, the mockery is taken as actual pro-Brownback editorial, and the intentionally-ironic logic behind the blog succeeds spectacularly.

Bravo Sisyphus. Here’s to a joke well-played.

OMG, I’m confused. What gives it away to you Jeff that sisyphus is doing satire? Is it the Colbert-ish Brownback-in-the-Flag graphic or what?

I’m scared when I read this kind of stuff.

Next they’re going to deny that DNA exists, or even atoms and molecules altogether. Hey you can’t see them right? The bible says that “every eye shall see” DON’T IT?!?! Darn these “false doctrines”!!

    Like GF’s new look.

    D’OH! Like GF’s old look.

David: I can’t settle on a theme. Old (Cutline) or new (Ocean Mist)?

It won’t matter once my custom design is done, anyway.

Bad spellers abound on both sides of the faith fence friends. I’m afraid Sisyphus is quite for real. Very afraid. But Jeff you may be on to something. If it is satire it the most painful satire EVER:

“As a former Democrat, I understand that sometimes you can squander years of your life on truly idiotic beliefs.” -Sisyphus

And the name choice (sisyphus = futility) might be another indicator that you’re right.

So how does one build a custom design?

  6. 2007 May 20

David: I’ve hired a design house to create a custom WP template/theme for me. Since it’s custom, we get to do everything we want, right from the ground up.

Well good luck with that design project. Hey what the heck happened to the nutrition blog you were going to start?

I’m still thinking that sisyphus is for real btw. It’s just too much effort to put together all those links and stuff just for a lark.

Is it possible that the accusations of hoaxing are a form of needling?

Is a “bad speller” someone who practices black magic?

I agree with Jeff on this one. A REAL ‘loonie’ wouldn’t have the sophistication to pick “Sisyphus”.

I do recall another even more complex hoax site on fundamentalism a few years ago. It seemed to disappear and I can’t recall the name. Wonder if it’s the same guy.
Anyone remember the other? I think it was allegedly some form of Baptist. Its satire was so subtle that you really had to scratch your head. Perfect.

(I haven’t yet really had time to thoroughly explore ‘Brownback’.)

Steve P: Are you thinking of The Landover Baptist Church? It’s still around.

Yeah, I left a comment calling him a loon, but on further reflection, it’s gotta be satire.

  11. 2007 May 22

I left him another comment calling him a satirical genius and applauding him for trolling everyone, and he deleted it through moderation. So, clearly, he doesn’t want the ruse to be exposed too much. I’m sure he’s having a ton of fun with it all.

OK, I guess you guys are probably right. So let’s BLESS HIS HEART for being so funny!

Thanks for “Landover” link, Barefoot. Now that’s some painful satire there!

    Yes, Landover Baptist!
    Thank you sooo much! :)

I still wonder if there is a connection. The complexness of both sites is absolutely amazing!
